This year the 16th edition of Mercedes-Benz Aegean Cup will take place and the
tournament will continue its tradition to be a showcase for various youth national teams.
Turkey and France were crowned champions 6 times in the cup which was first held in
1999 and missed in 2005, whereas Ukraine, Russia and USA lifted the trophy once.
Started under the name “Bora Öztürk Tournament” in 1999 with the participation of Turkey,
Romania and Russia, is
being organized as "Aegean
Cup since 2002. Turkey took
part in all past tournaments
as hosts, while Belgium and
Ukraine took part twelve
times.
Originally played as a U15
level tournament, Mercedes-
Benz Aeagean Cup's age
level was first pushed to U17
in 2002 before being pulled
back to U16 in 2004.
So far, playing 58 matches in
the tournament’s history,
Turkey recorded 37 wins, 14
draws and 7 defeats. They
scored 126 goals,
conceeding 53
goals in those
matches.
